Centre for the Prevention of Radicalization Leading to Violence

The mission of the Centre for the Prevention of Radicalization Leading to Violence is to prevent radicalization leading to violence and hateful behavior through education, mobilization and support for the population of Montreal and Quebec in an approach community deployed to act upstream, geared towards accessibility for all, concerted with partners from all backgrounds and rooted in expertise that is both scientific and practical.

  • Community services

    Services

    • Respond to the specific needs of individuals using alternative, non-violent means.
    • Support individuals at risk, by early identifying the factors of vulnerability and protection associated with the different facets of the radicalization process leading to violence.
    • Make connections with other victims or former radicals to share experiences.
    • Provide support and listening :

    o people worried about a member of their entourage;

    o people whose loved one has radicalized;

    o to people who know a course of radicalization or who have experienced one;

    o people who have lost a loved one due to their involvement in a violent radical group or movement;

    o professionals in settings affected by radicalization situations leading to violence and hateful behavior.

    • Encourage the involvement of individuals in a situation of radicalization or at risk and their families in activities around the themes associated with the problem (critical thinking, polarization, feeling of stigma and belonging, identity, etc.).

    *Community support will be adapted according to the needs of the service request.

    The mentoring program: A presence for all

    The objective of the A Presence for All project is to support participants' personal, social, religious, political, identity or ideological questions, towards pro-social spaces and means of engagement. Thus, the program does not aim to counter any ideological affiliation, political / religious orientations or personal beliefs, but rather to support people going through personal problems that could make them fall into extremism or hatred.

  • Community mobilisation

    The CPRLV puts forward a variety of prevention activities, the orientation and content of which are shaped to validly equip target audiences as well as actors affected by radicalization leading to violence and hateful acts

    Services

    • Awareness workshops addressing the following themes:
    -I have no place here (Feeling of exclusion)
    -The same discourse for all (Dogmatic vision)
    -Us against them (Polarization of beliefs)
    -It's none of my business (Feeling of indifference)
    -They are all the same (Essentialization of the other)
    • Community development and awareness activities;
    • Development of prevention strategies responding to the particularities of an environment;
    • Creation of a space for dialogue and pro-social engagement.

  • Formation

    The CPRMV offers practical training in the areas of psychosocial intervention, education, justice and public safety; it is also aimed at community and institutional organizations (public and private). On the other hand, it offers schools various activities aimed at raising students' awareness of the issues raised by radicalization leading to violence and by hate crimes and incidents. The training courses are intended both for workers and managers of the communities concerned.

    Services

    They meet the following objectives:

    - Understand the characteristics of the different types of violent radicalization (extreme right, extreme left, politico-religious and single-cause);

    - Recognize and understand the behaviors and situations leading to violent radicalization;

    - Identify the factors of vulnerability and protection in the face of violent radicalization;

    - Know the provisions and appropriate accompanying or management actions in the face of radicalization situations.
