Recognized by the National Assembly and the City of Montreal, the National Social Reintegration Week highlights the importance of social reintegration work as an essential factor in public safety.
Social rehabilitation is the best way to protect our communities from crime in the long term. It is therefore to raise awareness of this process and to encourage public discussion that the ASRSQ decided to create the National Social Rehabilitation Week.
In general, police and prisons are often the institutions associated with our safety. However, halfway houses, specialized employability services, community service programs, mental health, addiction, restorative justice, and sexual offending treatment services all contribute to preventing recidivism and strengthening the safety of our communities by supporting the rehabilitation of justice-involved individuals.
The failures of social rehabilitation are often heavily emphasized, while the successes are only very modestly celebrated. Indeed, it is very rare for the media to report stories of successful social rehabilitation — but that is not because they do not exist. Within our network, we know that most of the people who benefit from our services do not return to detention.
Three objectives of social reintegration :
1. Social and community reintegration (through programs specialized in home care, employability, addiction, monitoring compliance with release conditions, etc.)
2. Personal development (through specialized programs designed to improve social skills, parental abilities, etc.)
3. Reconciliation (through restorative justice programs, for instance)
